Six students earn sponsored scholarships
The International Code Council manages the Sponsored Scholarships program, which is funded by contributors and International Code Council chapters and honors those who have been essential to the formation of the Code Council. The Sponsored Scholarship programs include the William J. Tangye Scholarship, J.W. “Bill” Neese Scholarship, C.D. Howard Scholarship, Charlie O’Meilia Scholarship and the ICC General Scholarship Fund.
The scholarships are available to children — defined as birth children, stepchildren, legally adopted children or a legal ward financially supported by the employee — of code enforcement agency personnel. The jurisdictional authority must be an active Governmental Member of the Code Council. Selected by a committee of volunteers, scholarship recipients must be enrolled in a recognized and/or accredited school such as a university, trade school, business college or other as approved by the Code Council prior to distribution of the award.
William J. Tangye Scholarship
The William J. Tangye Scholarship is awarded by the International Code Council in memory of William J. Tangye, the first chief executive officer of the International Code Council. The scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance to children of ICC members in their pursuit of higher education. This scholarship is available to children of all active Code Council members
Stephanie Smith was awarded the 2018 William J. Tangye scholarship. She is a sophomore at Montana State University, studying electrical engineering and computer engineering. Her father works for the National Park Service in Montana.
J.W. “Bill” Neese Scholarship
The J.W. “Bill” Neese Scholarship is awarded by the Central Florida Chapter in honor of J.W. “Bill” Neese. The scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance to children of ICC Governmental Members.
Tanner Wallace, a senior at Texas Tech University majoring in business administration and management, is the recipient of the 2018 J. W. “Bill” Neese scholarship. His father works for the city of Lubbock, Texas.
C.D. Howard Scholarship
The C.D. Howard Scholarship is awarded by the Code Officials Association of Alabama in memory of C.D. Howard. The scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance to children of ICC Governmental Members.
Reagan Malone earned the C.D. Howard scholarship. She is a junior studying civil engineering at the University of Alabama Huntsville. Her father works for the city of Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Charlie O’Meilia Scholarship
The Charlie O’Meilia Scholarship is awarded by the Palm Beach County (Florida) chapter in honor of long-time member Charlie O’Meilia. The scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance to children of ICC Governmental Members.
Alyssa Applegate, a freshman at Florida State University studying marketing, is the 2018 recipient of the Charlie O’Meilia scholarship. Her father works for the city of North Port, Fla.
ICC General Scholarship Fund
The International Code Council General Scholarships were established to honor those who have been essential to the formation of the ICC or its legacy organizations and have promoted building safety and the public’s awareness of building and fire safety professionals. The scholarships are intended to provide financial assistance to children of ICC Governmental Members.
Dawson Floyd, a freshman at Horry Georgetown Technical College, is the recipient of one the general scholarships. His planned major is civil engineering. His father works for Horry County Code Enforcement in South Carolina.
Dakota Bichara received the second general scholarship. A freshman at Youngstown State University studying medical laboratory science, her father works for the city of Middleburg Heights, Ohio.
