Code Council board winter meeting highlights
The International Code Council Board of Directors held its annual winter meeting and workshop from Dec. 5-6, 2019, in Christ Church, Barbados. Present at the meeting were Board President Greg Wheeler, the board’s senior officers and directors, Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, and Code Council senior staff. During its first-ever international meeting, the board covered a wide variety of issues, including the following notable items:
2020–2022 Code Council budget: The board approved an amended standing motion from the budget committee to approve the Code Council’s 2020–2022 budget.
Update on online remote voting: The board approved the recommendation from the Ad Hoc Committee on ABM Business & Elections, which was charged with evaluating the feasibility of online remote voting for board elections and other ABM business, to sunset the Ad Hoc Committee while a greater discussion on Code Council governance takes place (see Vision 2025 strategic planning session below).
Vision 2025 strategic planning session: The board engaged in a productive strategic planning session to discuss and assess its vision and desired outcomes for the future in Code Council governance. This discussion is a crucial step in effectuating Section 4(a) of the Code Council’s 2025 Vision: Strategic Plan for the Future.
Committee and subsidiary board appointments: The board approved reappointments to the International Accreditation Service Board of Directors and appointments to the following Code Council technical committees, for which individual appointment e-mails are forthcoming:

2020–2022 Building Code Action Committee (BCAC)
2020–2022 Fire Code Action Committee (FCAC)
2020–2022 Sustainable/Energy/High-Performance Code Action Committee (SEHPCAC)
2020–2022 Plumbing Mechanical Fuel Gas Code Action Committee (PMGCAC)
2020–2022 Compliance Code Action Committee (CCAC)
Regulator vacancies on the Committee on Healthcare (CHC)
Further, on Dec. 6, 2019, the board engaged in a productive and well-attended, full-day workshop co-hosted by the Code Council and the CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ). This workshop focused on building resilient communities through the implementation of modern building codes and featured presentations by Code Council and CROSQ representatives as well as those from ASTM International; the World Bank; the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers; the Inter-American Development Bank; the Caribbean Development Bank; and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States.
