A Note Above the Rest: Steve Van Note on Loving to Learn

A Note Above the Rest: Steve Van Note on Loving to Learn

By: Lizzie Hudson, Assessment Center Program Manager

As
the Assessment Center celebrates the value of lifetime learning this month, we recognize one of the leaders in learning at the Code Council, Steve Van Note.

Steve, who is Managing Director of Product Development, has been with the International Code Council for 13 years. From his beginnings as a technical writer and reviewer, Steve now heads projects which include development of resource materials in support of the International codes; management, review, and technical editing of publications; and presentation of seminars and technical instruction across the country.

As a writer and editor, Steve has authored several significant Code Council titles, including Significant Changes to the International Residential CodeResidential Code Essentials, Homebuilders’ Jobsite Codes, and Inspector Skills—a required reference for select certification exams.

As a presenter and instructor, Steve travels at least once a month across the U.S.  His presentations reach myriad audiences, including inspectors and building officials, plans examiners, contractors, designers, suppliers, permit technicians, and those looking for a change in their career.

Steve describes why he is passionate about his job:

Besides working with great people in the Product Development team in developing support products, it gives me the opportunity to help people do their jobs better, develop their skills and improve their knowledge of codes. It also gives me the opportunity to learn through interaction with staff and members.

Presenting seminars is also a learning experience for me and I come away with a better understanding of regional differences related to building construction and code administration. In working with ICC Chapters and other construction related associations, it’s rewarding to experience the benefits of networking with others in this field. Seminars present an opportunity for attendees to exchange ideas and build long term working relationships.

We are grateful for Steve’s many contributions to the Code Council and to the larger community of the building industry.  The best teachers among us are also those who never stop loving to learn.
