Code Council helping California transition to new building codes

The new California Building Code developed by the International Code Council will be available July 1. The California Codes are based on the International Building Code and International Fire Code and are the first building code updates for California since 1997. The California Code books can be pre-ordered at www.iccsafe.org/california.

The International Code Council is a one-stop shop to help building and fire officials, architects, builders, engineers and others in the construction industry prepare for the transition to the new California Codes in January 2008. These include training classes and seminars, certification services, California-specific books and reference materials, and membership opportunities that offer valuable benefits, involvement in the code development process, and discounts on International Code Council products and services.

Working closely with California stakeholders, the International Code Council provides training programs designed to support successful implementation of the new California Codes. Seminars are developed and taught by leading experts with real-world experience in application of the codes. Their in-depth knowledge allows them to help trainees quickly master the new code concepts.

The International Code Council also partners with California Building Officials to offer certifications for California’s code professionals. The program allows individuals to demonstrate their knowledge of various California construction codes, standards and practices, and helps jurisdictions evaluate individuals’ code knowledge.

International Accreditation Services, a subsidiary of the International Code Council offers accreditation for departments and other companies that will help in meeting the Special Inspections code requirements in the new California Building Codes.
