ICC’s Beth Tubbs Appointed to SFPE Board of Directors

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SPFE) announced the appointment of Beth Tubbs to its Board of Directors. Tubbs is currently a Senior Staff Engineer with the International Code Council and has been with the association since its consolidation in 2003.

With this prestigious appointment, Tubbs becomes one of 17 members of the Board of Directors of SPFE who represent leading professionals in the fire protection engineering field. With more than 4,500 members worldwide in over 60 chapters, the Society works to advance the science and practice of fire protection engineering and its allied fields, and foster fire protection engineering education.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for me to take a leadership role in the industry that I’ve worked in for nearly 20 years,” Tubbs said. “I also believe my participation on the board will be beneficial for both ICC and SFPE.”

“This is a significant achievement for Beth and is another example of how ICC’s talented staff is dedicated to serving our Members, stakeholders and the industry,” said Code Council CEO Dominic Sims, CBO. “With Beth’s leadership and guidance, we look forward to working with SFPE to improve fire safety in the built environment to better protect citizens and their communities.”

At the Code Council, Tubbs has been involved in a variety of activities including code development and support and participation in various committees both on a national and international level. She is currently secretariat to the International Existing Building Code (IEBC), ICC Performance Code for Buildings and Facilities, and secretariat to Chapters 7, 8, 9 and 32 of the International Fire Code (IFC).

In making the announcement of Tubbs’ appointment, SFPE Executive Director Nicole Testa Boston said, “Beth is well-respected in the fire protection industry and we are excited to welcome her to SFPE’s Board of Directors. We believe her strong experience, especially in code development and her work leading the SFPE Design Fire Committee, will be extremely valuable as SFPE continues to grow and expand our technical activities worldwide. We also are looking forward to increased partnership opportunities with the ICC as a result of Beth’s role on the board and have already begun discussing ways that our two organizations can work more closely together to engineer a fire safe world.”

Tubbs holds P.E. licenses in both Massachusetts and California in Fire Protection Engineering and was named a Fellow of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers in 2010. She earned her B.S. in civil engineering and M.S. in fire protection engineering at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. During her career, Tubbs has authored nearly 20 articles and professional papers on the subjects of codes and fire protection. In 2009 she received the SFPE Rolf H. Jensen Award for Outstanding Committee Service and the SFPE Hats Off Award.

Asked why she became involved in fire protection engineering in the first place, Tubbs said, “As a senior in college, I was a structural engineering major, but fire protection engineering seemed to offer an interesting and unique path and one that has a goal of protecting people from fire.”
