IECC/HERS Compliance Specialists

To obtain this combination designation, you must meet the following requirements:

1. be a current RESNET HERS rater or Rating Field Inspector (RFI)
2. and hold a 79 - Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner

If you hold an active G8 Energy Code Specialist Designation, this may be used in place of the 79.

Applicants must:

1. hold an active ICC Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner (79), and
2. be a current RESNET Home Energy Raters (HERS) Rater OR a Rating Field Inspector (RFI)

Once an individual has passed and obtained the ICC Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner (79) certification and is a current RESNET Home Energy Raters (HERS) Rater OR a Rating Field Inspector (RFI), they may then apply for the IECC/HERS Compliance Specialist designation with a $50 associated fee.

Once your training and certification exams are completed the process of applying and obtaining the Compliance Specialist designation may be done online immediately.

The Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner 79 Online Prep Course, self-paced online training available through the ICC Learning Center, is one of the best resources available to assist with preparing yourself for the required certification exam. Most individuals who only need to complete their ICC Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner (79) certification prior to applying for the IECC/HERS Compliance Specialist designation will select to take the Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner 79 Online Prep Course, self-paced online training available through the ICC Learning Center. This course has 6 hours of module that are designed to develop the understanding of energy code compliance issues that will be helpful in completing the certification exam.

The exam is available through Code Council’s convenient PRONTO platform so you can remotely take your exam at a time of your choosing. The proctored exam has 50 questions with a 2-hour time limit.  The recommended reference allowed during the exam is the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code.

The pass rate varies, but the more up-front effort you put in the better results you can expect.Those who take the Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner 79 Online Prep Course, self-paced online training available through the ICC Learning Center have pass rates up to 90%.

• This certification will have a wall certificate available online.
• Since you will already have a Code Council certification when you achieve this designation, you will already have a wallet card. The wallet card will be updated with the new designation. You’ll be able to log into your myICC account and print out a wall certificate with your new designation. Your certificate renews every three years, and during that time you’ll need to maintain continuing education units (CEUs) to prepare for renewal.

Please note, you will need to renew this combination designation in addition to your other certifications (including your 79 Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner).

You do not have to keep your 79 certification active to keep your new ECS certification valid. If you’d prefer to let your 79 certification lapse and only keep renewing the ECS, this is acceptable, but you do have the option to maintain both.
