GLOBAL EXPANSION

Global Expansion

The International Code Council’s global strategy, as part of our 2025 vision, aims to expand the delivery of products and services in markets outside of the USA. The Code Council strives to do this by following our three main objectives:

  • Expand the reach of the Code Council into strategically important markets.
  • Facilitate the promotion of Code Council products and services internationally.
  • Increase the visibility of the Code Council as the global leader in building safety.

Here are some of the highlights from 2021:

Code Council MENA Regional Office

  • The Code Council's strategy in the MENA (Middle East & North Africa) region involves leveraging the full family of solutions to positively impact building safety.
  • In 2021 we engaged with government officials, consultants, industry professionals, and others in the design and construction industry to better understand their needs and offer solutions.
MENA

Two years after the MENA regional office was established in Dubai, ICC resources are reaching a growing number of regulators and stakeholders through localization efforts. In 2021, distribution of customized ICC marketing and training content, as well as participation in the Big 5 Dubai show, led to growth in brand awareness of the Code Council family of solutions in the MENA region, and we look forward to more of the same in 2022.

Global Resiliency Dialogue

  • In 2021, the Global Resiliency Dialogue released two reports.
  • The first explored how forward-looking climate data is used in building codes around the world.
  • The second report, presented during the COP26 Climate Conference, took a deeper look at the challenges of integrating climate science and building science in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand and provided the foundation for the International Building Resilience Guidelines that will be released in 2022.
Climate Data and Assessment Climate Pathways

The Code Council recognizes that enhancing the resilience of buildings to evolving climate risk is a challenge faced by communities across the globe. We share a common mission with code development and research organizations worldwide to help reduce the impacts of hazards so that our resources, data collection and dissemniation methods are efficient and globally harmonized. This brings value to regulators and users of building codes and standards not only in the United States but around the world.

Building Code Solutions in Belize

  • The Code Council entered into an agreement with the Belize Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing involving a variety of services that will enable Belize to develop a new suite of building codes for the country based on the I-Codes.
  • The agreement involves electronic access to I-Codes, licensing rights and virtual training provided to government regulatory and enforcement bodies as well as engineering and construction industry professionals.
Belize

This historic agreement with Belize lays the foundation for the adoption and implementation of modern building requirements based on the most current International Codes. We are pleased to be working closely with the Belize Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing and their various stakeholders to support this effort through training and other services available through our family of solutions.

Trinidad & Tobago Energy Efficiency Building Code

  • The Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS) is on track to implement the CARICOM Regional Energy Efficiency Building Code (CREEBC).
  • The CREEBC is developed from the 2018 model International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) by the CARICOM Regional Organization for Standards and Quality (CROSQ).
  • TTBS will use the CREEBC to create the Trinidad and Tobago Energy Efficiency Building Code.

This effort leverages the work of the Code Council, CROSQ and its member countries in the creation of the CREEBC, a modern, effective and affordable energy code that will now serve as the foundation for development of the Trinidad and Tobago Energy Efficiency Building Code. We applaud the CROSQ, TTBS and other nations in the region in their commitment to help ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

Bangladesh Building Code

  • The Code Council, primarily through the work of S.K. Ghosh Associates, continued its work with the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK) of Dhaka to improve the enforcement capabilities for the new Bangladesh building code.
  • Between March-July 2021, we carried out a training program which included 43 free webinars that served nearly 1,400 professionals.
Belize

The work that we are doing in Bangladesh is extremely important, because enforcement is a key component to ensuring that the building codes that are adopted are then followed. The initiative taken by RAJUK is something that should be considered by other emerging economies that lack the capacity to implement and enforce their building regulations.

Building Code of Pakistan

  • The International Code Council partnered with the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) to develop and sign the Building Code of Pakistan (BCP 2021).
  • The Code Council and Pakistan Engineering Council have had a long-term partnership since 2005 and have been working on the development of the BCP since 2017.
  • Based on the 2021 International Building Code, BCP 2021 will provide minimum benchmarks for structural safety of building design, construction, operation, practices and installation of allied building systems in Pakistan.
Belize

We are pleased to continue our long-standing global partnership with the Pakistan Engineering Council. The BCP 2021 contains significant advancements in building safety and is a landmark achievement that reflects Pakistan’s continued commitment in furthering the advancement of building safety in the country.
