Building Safety Month 2021

  • Building Safety Month is held annually in order to raise awareness about the importance of building codes and the role of building safety professionals in ensuring our communities remain safe, sustainable and resilient.
  • The 2021 Building Safety Month's theme was "Prevent, Prepare, Protect. Building Codes Save."
  • The event was broken into weekly themes: Energy and Innovation, Training the Next Generation, Water Safety, and Disaster Preparedness.
  • The 2021 campaign made a great impact, reaching hundreds of thousands of people on social media, in media outlets, and through virtual events.
  • We secured a Presidential Building Safety Month proclamation in the first year of the Biden Presidency, which specifically referenced the Global Resiliency Dialogue.

Discussions on Existing Building Maintenance & Inspections

  • Following the Surfside Condo Collapse in Florida, the Code Council took the lead—in conjunction with the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) and the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS)—to convene a panel in West Palm Beach. Participants discussed maintenance and inspections of existing buildings.
  • Following the discussion, the Code Council drafted a protocol to assist jurisdictions in ensuring the safety of existing buildings.
  • The Ensuring the Safety of Existing Buildings in Florida: Codes, Standards, and Inspections Guide provides criteria to be followed regarding inspections and can be used on a voluntary basis.
  • In December 2021, the Code Council hosted a virtual discussion on existing building maintenance and inspection, a follow up to the West Palm Beach discussions, and included a question-and-answer session with attendees.
  • The event was attended by over 600 people and produced key takeaways that will be used in the development of non-mandatory guidelines for building safety professionals and jurisdictions.

ICC Annual Conference 2021

  • The 2021 annual conference and hearings were held from September 19-26 in Pittsburgh with over 1,000 registrations.
  • Awards were given to building safety professionals and organizations that surpass expectations for their communities, the industry, and the association.
  • The conference provided onsite activities for professionals to reengage with peers, learn about industry trends and earn CEUs.
  • The Code Council membership elected new officers and board members to lead the association.
  • Experts from around the world convened for the all-virtual Global Connections Day event to address extreme weather challenges and support resilience in the global community.
  • After the conclusion of the conference, the Public Comment Hearings took place, where attendees influenced and contributed to the development of the 2024 I-Codes.

COP26

  • The Global Climate Change Conference, known as COP26, was held in Glasgow, Scotland from November 1-12, 2021.
  • National governments and interested parties gathered to address the climate crisis and bolstered their commitment in improving adaptation, mitigation and finance to support long-term change.
  • This year the Code Council held two presentations, led by Judy Zakreski and Ryan Colker, on Pathways to Climate Resilience and the Global Resiliency Dialogue.
  • The Code Council was a prominent voice for the building safety industry and highlighted the key role of building codes and standards in achieving climate resilience.

ICC Learn Live

  • ICC Learn Live's spring and fall sessions gave professionals an opportunity to join peers and the Code Council for a virtual experience to earn valuable CEUs.
  • Topics covered architecture, engineering and construction; technology collaboration solutions; building to improve communities; unique building structures; and changes to the 2021 I-Codes.
  • Speakers at ICC Learn Live included SMEs at the Code Council and throughout the building safety industry.
  • Top sessions attended included Best Practices for Major Jurisdiction Committees, Collaborative Efforts for Public Safety, Extreme Structures, and significant code changes to the 2021 IBC, IRC and IFC.
