Jack Applegate has been a Building Official serving the northwestern U.S. since 1998, serving multiple jurisdictions in Oregon and Washington over the last 22-plus years. Over the years he has worked as an inspector, plans examiner, building official and for eight years worked as a city fire marshal and code enforcement officer. With two previous generations of family serving as code officials and a son serving as a new code official, it is fair to say it has been a family tradition to help others by building safety.

Applegate has been an active member of the Oregon Building Officials Association, Southern Oregon Building Officials Association, Washington Building Officials Association, and a regular contributor to all state Code Council Chapters within Region II. He has served as secretary, treasurer, vice president, and two terms as president of the ICC Region II, Board of Directors. His Code Council service also includes participation in committees, chair positions, chapter leadership roles, ICC Exam Committees, ICC BCAC Service, ICC Code Action Committee Service, and advisory roles on veteran and military family programs, The Technical Training Program, and more.

Having worked in the construction industry since 1988 as a high school laborer and working many years as a carpenter, framer and tradesperson in the HVAC industry for the U.S. Navy, Applegate serves with a diverse background in the construction and code official industry. His military career included service in the U.S. Navy as a Desert Shield and Desert Storm veteran, along with counter-narcotics operations across the globe. During his service he was awarded the Joint Meritorious Service medal, Kuwaiti Liberation medal, Coast Guard Joint Meritorious Unit Citation, the Southeast Asia Service medal with a Bronze Star, National Defense Service medal, Meritorious Unit Citation medal, the Battle “E” award (4 awards), Expert Rifle medal, and the Expert Medal Pistol award.

Applegate earned an Associated Degree in Building Inspection Technology from Chemeketa Community College’s BIT program. During this time, he also entered his first volunteer board service as an Executive Board Member and Vice President of the Chemeketa Community College Student Chapter of the Code Council from 1997-1999. Applegate went on to earn more than 35 state, national and international certifications.
