Director At Large
Michael Savage
Director of Building Safety
Marion County, Florida
Send EmailBorn into a family heavily involved in construction, Michael Savage was destined for a career in the building industry. Originally from Worcester County, Maryland, his grandfather owned a general contracting company that employed relatives including his father and uncle. Unfortunately, at only 8-months old, Savage lost his father in a construction accident; but this did not disturb what would be his life-long connection to the built environment.
In the U.S. Army Savage was assigned to work with the Director of Engineering and Housing where he managed property book work orders. During his three years of active duty and six years on reserve, Savage received on-the-job training as an electrician, plumbing and mechanical technician.
In 1995 Savage began his career when he became a building inspector and served as Chief Inspector, Chief Building Official, Zoning Administrator and Fire Marshal licensed as a Special Assistant to the State Fire Marshal in Maryland. In 2014, Savage served as the Chief Building Official for the City of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and since 2018, he has worked as the Director of Building Safety for Marion County, Florida.
Savage currently holds 42 Code Council certifications, including Master Code Professional, and has an Associate’s Degree in Construction Management, a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and is currently working towards a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. He was elected to the Code Council Board of Directors in October 2019 and since his election to the board, Savage has volunteered and been assigned to several committees, as he stated, “It is all about the membership – we need to do what is right for our members.”
