The International Code Council releases 2019 guideline for the safe use of repurposed shipping containers
Applications now being accepted for the Off-site and Modular Construction Standard Consensus Committee
Las Vegas, Nev. – Today the International Code Council announced the release of its 2019 Guideline for the Safe Use of ISO Intermodal Shipping Containers Repurposed as Buildings and Building Components. The Code Council introduced the guideline at the Modular Building Institute’s 36th Annual World of Modular in Las Vegas.
The guideline provides an in-depth, technical overview for how to design, review and approve intermodal shipping containers as a building element, and is primarily intended to benefit state and local jurisdictions, owners, architects, builders and engineers as they react to a lack of regulatory and compliance guidelines amidst the growing trend of shipping container repurposing.
“Repurposing shipping containers as building materials is a growing trend in construction,” commented Code Council CEO Dominic Sims, CBO. “The new guideline will provide communities with the tools they need to ensure that repurposed shipping containers are used in a safe and responsible manner.”
Coinciding with the guideline release, the Code Council also announced that it is accepting applications for its Off-Site and Modular Construction Standard Consensus Committee as it prepares to begin developing two new comprehensive standards. The Committee will develop two new off-site and modular construction standards: Planning, Design, Fabrication and Assembly; and Inspection and Regulatory Compliance.
As part of their work, the Committee will be responsible for the development of minimum requirements and standards to safeguard the public health, safety and general welfare while addressing societal and industry challenges through design, construction, regulatory and testing requirements for off-site and modular construction. All stakeholders are invited to apply by the April 15, 2019, deadline; Code Council membership is not required. Learn more and download the application here.
