Steve Burger, CBO, LEED AP, retired and working part-time for Bureau Veritas, has been in the code industry since 1972, working as a permit tech, residential plans examiner, building inspector and code enforcement officer up to a chief building official and code consultant. A past president of the Arizona Chapter and past chairman of the Arizona Building Officials, he was named Building Official of the Year in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2005, and was honored by the International Code Council as Educator of the Year in 2016. Presently, he is a member of the Arizona Building Officials and the Central Arizona Chapter of Building Officials. With a multitude of certifications, he has served on the ICBO/ICC Permit Technician Exam Committee, Education Committee, Certification Committee and the Legacy Codes Exam Committee as well as the Sacramento Valley Association of Building Officials and the Arizona Building Officials Education Committee and Legislative Committee. He has taught permit technician educational classes since 1998 in more than 10 states and authored the ICC Permit Technician Study Companion and updates to various reference books as well as multiple articles and webinars for the International Code Council.
