2009 International Plumbing Code First to Serve the Industry

In response to industry need for earlier releases of new codes, the 2009 International PlumbingCode (IPC) is the first, new plumbing code available to the industry this year. The 2009 IPC is now in stock at the Code Council’s Bookstore (www.iccsafe.org/IPC2009) in loose-leaf or soft cover, and as an immediate download from www.ecodes.biz. For the first time, the IPC also includes the International Private Sewage Disposal Code (IPSDC) at no extra cost.

The plumbing industry will have an IPC that is clearer to understand and apply on the job, and more user-friendly than ever. The IPSDC, a companion to the IPC, includes provisions for design, installation, and inspection of private sewage disposal systems, and provides flexibility in the development of safe and sanitary systems.

Many new updates provide the user with up-to-date documents ready for adoption or for revisions to your existing code, for example:

412.2 Floor drains

Floor drains shall have removable strainers. The floor drain shall be constructed so that the drain is capable of being cleaned. Access shall be provided to the drain inlet. Ready access shall be provided to floor drains.

Exception: Floor drains serving refrigerated display cases shall be provided with access.

608.8 Identification of potable and non-potable water.

All non-potable water outlets such as hose connections, open ended pipes, and faucets shall be identified at the point of use for each outlet with the words, non-potable–not safe for drinking. The words shall be indelibly printed on a tag or sign constructed of corrosion-resistant waterproof material or shall be indelibly printed on the fixture. The letters of the words shall be not less than 0.5 inches in height and of color in contrast to the background on which they are applied.
