Larry Novak, Chief Structural Engineer for the International Code Council, gave a well-received structural presentation at the American Concrete Institute’s Chapter Meeting in Puerto Rico on February 16, 2023.
The seminar touched on the exceptional role that codes and standards play in the design and construction process and included live demonstrations revealing the hidden world of high-rise buildings. The auditorium was packed to capacity with code officials, engineers, architects, contractors and university students who extended thought provoking questions throughout the presentation.
Speaking to the Next Generation
Novak regularly gives interactive presentations to students of all ages to help bring structural concepts to life. The presentations aim to inspire the next generation of young minds to consider a career in the building safety community. His expertise and knowledge were celebrated after this recent presentation in Puerto Rico where he received a standing ovation from the audience.
Eileen Velez Vega, the first female Secretary of Puerto Rico’s Department of Transportation and Public Works, followed Novak’s presentation and discussed the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education and student outreach programs. Vega specializes in the design and construction of commercial and general aviation airports, as well as multidisciplinary projects and business development.
Novak also had the opportunity to meet with the Puerto Rico Speaker of the House, Hon. Rafael Hernández Montanez, for an in-depth discussion on the importance of codes and standards for new and existing buildings – including seismic, wind and hurricane performance.
Overall, the event was an overwhelming success and gave the audience insight into the philosophies behind building safety codes and the important life lessons which can be gleaned from a career in the building safety industry.
