Code Council Plumbing Expert, Gary Gauthier, Participates as Judge in Plumbing Craft Competitions
At the 35th annual NCC, close to 190 of the nation’s best craft professionals showcased their expertise across various trades, including carpentry, electrical, HVAC, millwright, plumbing, welding and more.
Earlier this month, Gary Gauthier, Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas (PMG) Technical Resources Director at the International Code Council, journeyed to Kissimmee, FL, to honor the champions of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) National Craft Competition (NCC).
The NCC serves as a platform to recognize the accomplishments of men and women who represent the future of the construction industry. This competition, established in 1987, celebrates the advancement of skills in the building safety industry, attracting some of the nation’s most talented craft professionals and highlighting the important role craft skills play in the construction industry.
“Through our unwavering commitment to supporting PMG codes, nurturing the next generation of skilled labor, connecting with industry stakeholders and promoting career development pathways, the Code Council’s PMG Technical Resource Team stands as a steadfast advocate for the advancement and prosperity of the plumbing, mechanical and fuel gas industries,” said Gauthier.
35th Annual National Craft Competition
At the 35th annual NCC, close to 190 of the nation’s best craft professionals showcased their expertise across various trades, including carpentry, electrical, HVAC, millwright, plumbing, welding and more. Participants competed for top honors in 16 competitions, representing 12 crafts.
Gauthier played a pivotal role in judging the plumbing craft competition, which involved a written examination and the assembly of plumbing piping systems using materials such as copper, cast iron, steel pipe and PVC.
This test evaluated participants’ ability to interpret plumbing diagrams, install rough plumbing according to specifications and prepare various plumbing piping materials for connection.
Participation in this competition allowed individuals to:
- Demonstrate safety along with craft interdependency and teamwork
- Simulate working conditions where planning is critical to success
- Highlight individual leadership and workmanship skills as the project is assembled and completed
“This competition was a great opportunity to test competitors’ ability to read plumbing diagrams, install rough plumbing according to the diagrams and specifications and cut and prepare for connection of various plumbing piping materials,” said Gauthier. “Events like the NCC truly showcase the industry’s dedication to fostering career paths for aspiring professionals. It was an honor to judge the event.”
Supporting the Future Workforce Through Craft Competitions
In the spirit of fostering encouragement for skilled workers in the industry, Gauthier also traveled to Pennsylvania to serve as a judge for the ABC Pennsylvania State Plumbing Competition and will be traveling to Massachusetts for the Skills USA championship held from April 25-26.
“Our involvement in ABC and SkillsUSA competitions goes beyond mere sponsorship or observation; it’s about investing in the future workforce. These events provide a platform for talented individuals to demonstrate their skills, creativity and dedication. As judges, mentors and supporters, we offer guidance, feedback and encouragement, nurturing the potential within each competitor and empowering them to excel in their chosen field.” said Gauthier.
