Code Council Selected for Energy Training in 3 States

The International Code Council has been selected by the states of Illinois, New York and Tennessee to provide new professional development services regarding energy conservation Training and Certification.

The Code Council’s work will be underwritten by energy grants provided to states from federal stimulus dollars, including the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The U.S. Department of Energy has allocated portions of ARRA funding to all states for energy code compliance, training and certification.

The Code Council will prepare four certification exams related to sustainability and five online courses specific to the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) for the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. The certification exams will be for Commercial Energy Inspector; Commercial Energy Plans Examiner; Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner; and Green Building/Residential Examiner. The courses will address: 2009 IECC Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner; 2009 IECC/ASHRAE 90.1 Commercial Energy Inspector; 2009 IECC/ASHRAE 90.1 Commercial Energy Plans Examiner; 2009 IECC Energy Efficiency/Green Building; and 2009 IECC Certified Energy Professional.

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Bureau of Energy and Recycling, Building Industry Training and Education Programs, renewed a grant to the Code Council to provide training to building professionals in energy-efficient equipment and practices. ICC will develop seminars including the Illinois Energy Efficient Commercial Building Act; provide technical support to review statewide energy conservation implementation tactics and technology acceptance criteria; and provide technology development for compliance with the Illinois Energy Conservation Code. Recently, 25 seminars were delivered throughout Illinois, attended by more than 600 building regulatory professionals representing 127 municipalities. ICC also provided telephone-based training sessions, and developed, launched and maintained a Web-based clearing house.

The Council will deliver residential and commercial energy training at multiple locations around Tennessee for the state’s Department of Commerce and Insurance, Division of Fire Prevention. ICC will provide IECC training for residential and commercial building inspectors at 10 Tennessee locations.

Across the United States and around the world, Code Council training allows students to choose from more than 40 course titles covering all offerings of the International Codes, from fundamental to advanced courses on the 2009 IECC. ICC provides 1,400 days of training to more than 85,000 learners annually. It delivers more than 7,500 online training courses developed and taught by technical advisors and instructors experienced in code enforcement and adult learning.

Code Council Certification and Testing provides exams to more than 33,000 inspectors, building officials and contractors annually. Individuals being provided energy-efficient certification in construction and inspection, in accordance with the 2009 IECC, include Commercial Energy Inspector—IECC and Commercial Energy Plans Examiner—IECC. Exams being developed include Commercial Energy Inspector—ASHRAE 90.1 and IECC; and Commercial Energy Plans Examiner—ASHRAE 90.1 and IECC.

The International Code Council, a membership association dedicated to building safety, fire prevention and energy efficiency, develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. Most U.S. cities, counties and states choose the International Codes, building safety codes developed by the International Code Council. The International Codes also serve as the basis for construction of federal properties around the world, and as a reference for many nations outside the United States.
