ICC Continues Work with World Plumbing Council
International Code Council (ICC) Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO, has been designated as a representative on the World Plumbing Council (WPC). Founded in 2000, the WPC is an international organization which aims to develop and promote the image and standards of the plumbing industry worldwide. ICC is a member-focused association that develops model codes and standards used in the design, build and compliance process to construct safe, sustainable, affordable and resilient communities.
“For decades, ICC’s codes and standards and programs have addressed water-related issues,” Sims said. “Serving with the World Plumbing Council provides ICC another global platform to better educate the public about the importance of water efficiency and consumption and the role code compliance plays in public health and safety.”
The International Plumbing Code (IPC) sets minimum regulations for plumbing systems using both prescriptive and performance-related provisions to protect building occupants and the public. The International Green Construction Code (IgCC) addresses the conservation of natural resources in the built environment to include water, energy, and air quality. The IPC and IgCC are members of the ICC Family of International Codes.
“As part of their emergency drought plan, California officials adopted irrigation regulations outlined in a standard ICC co-developed with the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers,” Sims explained. “The current water shortage in the western United States is shining the spotlight on a global crisis, and how code and standard compliance can play a key role in mitigating these critical issues.”
Sims has served as ICC’s CEO since 2013 and previously held positions as Chief Operating Officer, Deputy Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President. He has served on and/or chaired numerous national committees and task forces across a span of topics, including code development, membership, government affairs, sustainability, and most recently resiliency. Having worked in the building safety field since 1983, Sims has held numerous positions, both elected and appointed at the federal, state and local level.
