International Code Council’s Karl Fippinger Appointed to Newly Formed Wildland Urban Interface Advisory Committee
The WAC brings together experts in fields relating to wildland-urban interface fire safety to leverage their professional experience, knowledge and insights to inform FSRI’s WUI research and related efforts.
Karl Fippinger, International Code Council Vice President of Fire and Disaster Mitigation, was recently appointed to serve on the newly formed Wildland Urban Interface Advisory Committee (WAC) to UL’s Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI).
The WAC brings together experts in fields relating to wildland-urban interface (WUI) fire safety to leverage their professional experience, knowledge and insights to inform FSRI’s WUI research and related efforts.
“I’m incredibly honored to join my fire service colleagues from across the country to help advise and guide FSRI’s wildfire research agenda, particularly as it pertains to the safety and resilience of the built environment,” said Fippinger.
As part of the WAC, Fippinger will collaborate with fire service leaders and researchers to advance the science around wildfire and public safety in the urban interface.
Advancing Fire Safety in the WUI
The U.S. Fire Administration defines the WUI as the zone of transition between unoccupied land and human development. It is the line, area or zone where structures and other human development meet or intermingle with undeveloped wildland or vegetative fuels.
This interface poses significant dangers to people and communities due to the increased risk of wildfires. Wildfires can quickly spread from the surrounding wildland areas into residential neighborhoods, causing destruction and putting lives at risk.
