We’re hearing stories from code officials around the world, and it’s truly amazing to see how building and fire departments are able to quickly adapt to such difficult circumstances. Your work is integral to the safety and resiliency of our communities, and the International Code Council is here to help support you with advanced building safety solutions that make your job easier.

If you haven’t already, please check out our new series of free webinars related to COVID-19 and building safety. Covering topics such as virtual inspections, online codes access, and digital training, these webinars will help you navigate the new virtual work environment.

Due to COVID-19, the Code Council has cancelled many of its in-person events, including Code Council Leadership Week in April, the Chapter Leadership Academy in June, and the summer members tour in July. All our committee meetings have been switched to virtual until further notice. And, our office closures have been extended through May 1.

The Code Council is now looking at potentially postponing the Annual Conference & Expo in October. There are a lot of considerations, including a concern for the health of our members and employees. We need to know if you anticipate being able to attend if the fall conference goes forward as planned. Please take this short survey to help inform our decision.

The Code Council has been working on the federal, state and local levels to try to secure the funding U.S. code departments need to go virtual. The U.S. Congress recently passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), which provides state, local, tribal and territorial governments with $150 billion through a Coronavirus Relief Fund for necessary spending in response to this public health emergency, $45.4 billion through FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund, and $5 billion through the Community Development Block Grant program.

We are reaching out to state governors to encourage them to make this funding available for code departments to transition to remote work. We are also urging the U.S. Congress to allocate support specifically for code department remote capabilities as part of an upcoming coronavirus response measure that Congress is currently considering.
