From April 5-7, 2024, the International Code Council hosted its inaugural Leadership Week in Orlando, Florida. This event was held in conjunction with the Committee Action Hearings for Group A Codes, taking place from April 7-16.
“At the Code Council, we are committed to providing valuable resources and support to help propel our members’ careers forward and foster a safer built environment globally,” said Code Council Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO. “Initiatives such as our Leadership Week provide an excellent chance for building safety professionals to enhance their industry expertise and connect with peers they might not typically meet.”
ICC Leadership Week 2024
Attendees of ICC Leadership Week enjoyed keynote speeches, industry-leading conversations, networking opportunities, sessions developed specifically for leaders in the building safety and construction professions and participating in an international building safety forum.
The event featured esteemed guest speakers like Henry L. Green, Former President and CEO of the National Institute of Building Sciences, and Craig Childress, U.S. Plumbing National Championship Winner.
The event kicked off on Friday with the Chapter Leadership Academy, offering attendees the opportunity to earn Code Council Continuing Education Units (CEUs) while learning effective leadership methods and connecting with peers. Saturday featured Henry L. Green’s keynote speech on different leadership styles, the attributes of a good leader and how leadership can support organizational goals and improve performance, followed by a moderated roundtable discussion on leadership.
In the evening, a special Building Safety Month Preview Reception gave attendees a glimpse of what to expect from the Code Council’s 2024 Building Safety Month celebration. Learn more about this year’s Building Safety Month here.
Sunday provided a platform for Code Council membership councils to meet and discuss important issues in the building safety profession. The day’s main event featured a panel discussion, held in partnership with the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes, on “How Model Building Codes, Retrofitting Programs, and a Culture of Disaster Resilience Impact and Improve Insurance Marketplace Health”.
This engaging discussion explored the three tenets of disaster resilience:
- Building code policy leadership
- Retrofit grant matching programs
- Increased public awareness
During the discussion, panelists introduced the 2024 Resilience Policy Resource Guide and Retrofitting Program Playbook, a roadmap for leaders wanting to champion resilience. Attendees were invited to join this discussion and discover how building safety professionals can drive positive change in their communities.
Committee Action Hearings
This year’s Committee Action Hearings offer code officials, architects, builders, structural engineers, fire, residential and existing building professionals as well as those responsible for the administration of the International Codes® (I-Codes®), the opportunity to provide input on proposed code changes to the Group A I-Codes.
“Opportunities to participate in the code development process allow all industry stakeholders to have a direct, positive impact on the safety and sustainability of the built environment,” said Code Council Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO. “Active participation from across the building and design community ensures the I-Codes are revised based on the latest building science and knowledge from prior experiences.”
The code development process for the 2027 I-Codes introduces a restructured process starting in 2024 with two Committee Action Hearings for Group A Codes and followed in 2025 by two Committee Action Hearings for Group B Codes. In April 2026, there will be combined Group A and B Public Comment Hearings with a combined Online Governmental Consensus Vote in May 2026. Please refer to the 2024/2025/2026 ICC Code Development Schedule for details on code groups and important deadlines.
The Committee Action Hearings are currently still being held and will continue through April 16. You can watch the hearings live, here.
