Supporting the Next Generation: International Code Council’s Debut at Iowa Skilled Trades “Build My Future” Event

On April 17, the International Code Council made its first appearance as a vendor at the 2024 Iowa Skilled Trades “Build My Future” event in Des Moines. With over 7,000 high school attendees eager to explore career paths in the skilled trades, public safety and various construction-related disciplines, the event provided an opportunity to cultivate curiosity and deepen understanding of building and fire safety regulations.

Among the attendees were students who were interested in understanding the intricacies of building codes and their role in ensuring the safety and integrity of the structures in their communities.

Inspiring the Building Safety Professionals of Tomorrow

Students stopped by the Code Council booth as they explored the event, where they were greeted by knowledgeable professionals ready to answer their questions. The students’ questions ranged from the pathways to careers in building and fire safety to the practical applications of regulatory codes in construction projects. Their curiosity and engagement underscored the importance of educating the youth about the significance of adhering to building and fire codes for safeguarding communities.

Working alongside Code Council staff was John Herzog, Permit and Development Center Supervisor for the City of Des Moines, Iowa. Herzog’s expertise provided valuable insights into the local enforcement and implementation of building codes, enriching the conversations and interactions at the booth.

Throughout the event, attendees witnessed firsthand the building and fire codes on display, gaining an understanding of how these regulations govern construction processes. From structural integrity to fire prevention measures, students learned how these codes serve as a framework for ensuring the safety and resilience of buildings.
