The Code Council’s industry voice

In 1995, the International Code Council established the Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) to act as the industry voice to the Code Council Board of Directors. Consisting of approximately 100 members, including laboratories, contractors, architects, manufacturers, engineers, builders, federal agencies and trade associations, the committee provides insight on multiple topics such as recommendations for the code development process.

Committee members include representatives from the American Council of Independent Laboratories, the Air Conditioning Contractors of America, the American Gas Association and more. A full list of participating organizations is available here.

The committee discusses relevant issues to improve the Code Council from an industry standpoint. One recent IAC proposal is a new addition to the code development process called Temporary Interim Amendment (TIA). The TIA would allow for amendments to the model codes to be accomplished outside of the normal structure of the code development process in order to incorporate corrective changes, correlation issues and mitigate hazards which are not viewed as emergency changes (Council Policy 28 Code Development, currently has Emergency Action Procedures to address “immediate threats to health and safety”). The IAC is currently drafting a proposal for the Code Council board to consider.

“The IAC is an integral part to the Code Council’s progression. It is important to continue to receive feedback and implement suggestions for the future growth of the Code Council,” said IAC Staff Liaison and ICC Senior Vice President of Technical Services Mike Pfeiffer. “With the help of the IAC members, we’ve been able to improve many of our processes.”

Meetings are held twice a year. The next meeting is set for the fall.
