Code Council Building Safety Month Reception
On May 24, 2023, the Code Council hosted a Building Safety Month reception at the new office. At the reception, Code Council Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO, and President of the Code Council Board of Directors, Michael Wich, CBO, signed a commemorative certificate of occupancy in appreciation the work of Capitol Crossing and the District of Columbia Department of Buildings in constructing the ultra-high-performance building and adhering to the District’s building safety requirements.
Over 100 individuals attended the reception, including U.S. House and Senate Staff, representatives from at least seven federal agencies, national building safety stakeholders, and ICC members in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia (DMV) area. The Code Council’s D.C. Chapter also presented a Building Safety Month proclamation from D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser at the event.
Supporting Code Council Initiatives
The relocation to Capitol Crossing reinforces the Code Council’s commitment to advancing sustainable and innovative building practices. Capitol Crossing is a Certified LEED Platinum building (the highest possible); however, the sustainable solutions go well beyond LEED criteria.
“The opportunity to move our D.C. headquarters to Capitol Crossing aligns with our values and underscores our commitment to sustainability and our membership,” said Dominic Sims. “This new space will provide a healthy and dynamic environment for employees, members and visitors alike.”
Capitol Crossing also utilized several of the Code Councils International Codes® (I-Codes) in the design and development of the building.
Importance of High–Performance Buildings
High-performance buildings play a vital role in our infrastructure. They are designed to maximize energy efficiency, optimize performance and minimize environmental impact by incorporating sustainable building practices.
The LEED rating system and industry-leading model codes, including the International Green Construction Code® (IgCC), have enabled the construction sector to introduce strategies to protect the comfort and health of communities, save money and preserve resources during the design, construction and operation of buildings.
It is essential for the building industry to combine efforts and resources to help raise awareness of policy initiatives, organizational priorities and innovations that enhance building performance, promote resiliency and sustainability and help foster healthy construction through high-performance buildings.
