International Code Council Mourns the Passing of Chief Ronny J. Coleman
The International Code Council mourns the passing of former California State Fire Marshal, Ronny J. Coleman. Chief Coleman was a staunch advocate for the adoption and enforcement of building and fire safety codes in California and throughout the world. One of Chief Coleman’s many accomplishments during his career of over 50 years was his instrumental role in the adoption of the International Codes (I-Codes®) as the basis for California’s building and fire safety codes.
“Ronny was a giant in the fire community, who had the unique ability to bring diverse views to the table to accomplish important things,” said Code Council Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO. “The Code Council was very fortunate to include him as one of our most important stakeholders.”
In 2009 Chief Coleman was honored with the Code Council’s prestigious President’s Award for his dedication and service to the building safety and fire prevention industry.
“Ronny was a strong supporter of uniformity and consistency in regulations based on modern building and safety codes,” said former Code Council Senior Vice President of Government Relations, Sara Yerkes. “He was an adviser and mentor whose valuable counsel was most helpful. His reputation and credibility were unquestionable.”
Chief Coleman served as Fire Chief for the cities of San Clemente and Fullerton, California. He was appointed California State Fire Marshal by Governor Pete Wilson and served in that role from 1992 to 2000. Chief Coleman was a member and leader of many fire service committees and organizations, including service as Past President of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. He authored more than 19 books and was influential within the fire service as advisor, leader, mentor and friend to many.
