Bill McKinney recipient of Excellence in Public Safety Award
Each year, the International Code Council recognizes peers and colleagues who are a reflection of what the association stands for: dedication to developing model codes and standards used in the design, build and compliance process to construct safe, sustainable, affordable and resilient structures. The Code Council honored several outstanding individuals and organizations for their accomplishments and contributions to building safety and resiliency in their communities during the 2019 Annual Conference in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Excellence in Public Safety Award is given to a member of the building safety industry who demonstrates integrity, professionalism and dedication to public service in the interest of public safety. William “Bill” McKinney, manager/building official of the Building Safety Department for the city of Nashua and president of the New Hampshire Building Officials Association, received the2019 Excellence in Public Safety Award during the ICC Members Luncheon on Oct. 22, 2019, in Las Vegas, Nev.
“It’s difficult for me to express just how honored I am to receive this award… I am truly humbled,” McKinney said upon accepting the award. “As I stand before all of you and look around the room, I realize just how many are as deserving of this award as I am. It’s rare that anyone succeeds at accomplishing great things without many people around them… you need to have that group effort.”
McKinney is an avid building safety advocate who has worked tirelessly to advance the International Codes in the state of New Hampshire. From countless hours spent in legislative hearings, committee meetings, and working with stakeholders to push for the latest code adoptions to supporting building inspector graduates of the New Hampshire Technical Institute’s Building Inspector and Plans Examiner Certificate Program — a participant in the Code Council’s High School Technical Training Program — he is a true role model.
“I’m very lucky to have had many people around me through the years as we worked through code legislation in the state of New Hampshire — my employer; the elected officials, mayor and the community development director for the city of Nashua; my team in Nashua, the New Hampshire Building Officials Association, particularly the board of directors who supported me in my vision as we moved New Hampshire forward; the state agencies that I’ve had the pleasure of working with; our state fire marshal’s office and legislatures; the many professional construction associations and organizations that I’ve built relationships with; and the International Code Council for all of the support that I’ve received over the years. Today I accept this award on behalf of all the great people around me who share my vision and who, together, accomplish much,” McKinney added. “I am truly honored. Thank you.”
His dedication to public service is unparalleled in the building safety industry. The International Code Council congratulates Bill McKinney as its 2019 Excellence in Public Safety Award recipient.
