Caribbean Community Regional Organization for Standards and Quality presented with ICC Global Award
Each year, the International Code Council recognizes peers and colleagues who are a reflection of what the association stands for: dedication to developing model codes and standards used in the design, build and compliance process to construct safe, sustainable, affordable and resilient structures. The Code Council honored several outstanding individuals and organizations for their accomplishments and contributions to building safety and resiliency in their communities during the 2019 Annual Conference in Las Vegas, Nev.
Established in 2012, the ICC Global Award recognizes distinguished service in support of the Code Council’s global mission and vision. The award is given to individuals or organizations with outstanding performance in promoting building safety around the world. The Caribbean Community Regional Organization for Standards and Quality, led by Chief Executive Officer Deryck Omar, is the received the 2019 ICC Global Award during the Global Luncheon on Oct. 23, 2019, in Las Vegas, Nev.
Omar’s colleagues describe him as “a consummate professional in the standards world and a force for change in the Caribbean.” His leadership in gathering stakeholders from the 15 member states to adopt a regional energy code resulted in the unanimous acceptance by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) of the Regional Energy Efficiency Building Code. The CARICOM Regional Energy Efficiency Building Code is based closely on the International Energy Conservation Code with only minor modifications to account for regional factors.
Because of the process that Omar developed and oversaw at the Caribbean Community Regional Organization for Standards and Quality, there is now strong momentum among the Caribbean Community member countries to adopt and implement the CARICOM Regional Energy Efficiency Building Code.
Through the promotion of a regional code that is closely based on the model International Energy Conservation Code, the Code Council is in a better position to develop and offer cost-effective customization to its training and support products. In fact, Omar and the Caribbean Community Regional Organization for Standards and Quality have been excellent partners and supporters of the Code Council. Omar has invited the Code Council Board of Directors to hold their December meeting in Barbados. At this meeting, the board will formally recognize the achievement that Omar has enabled for the Caribbean Community Regional Organization for Standards and Quality and further the Code Council’s global partnerships in the Caribbean region.
Deryck Omar was unable to accept the award in person. Code Council Executive Vice President Mark Johnson accepted the award on his behalf. Johnson has invested much effort and time into this project and was instrumental in working with Omar and the Caribbean Community Regional Organization for Standards and Quality to facilitate the implementation of the energy code. He has pursued opportunities for the Code Council in the Middle East, the Caribbean and elsewhere.
The International Code Council congratulates the Caribbean Community Regional Organization for Standards and Quality as its 2019 ICC Global Award recipient.
