S.K. Ghosh honored with Susan M. Frey Educator Award
Dr. S.K. Ghosh, Ph.D., F.ASCE, F.SEI, F.PCI, president of S. K. Ghosh Associates LLC, in Palatine, Ill., (a subsidiary of the International Code Council) was unanimously selected by the Board of Directors of the National Council of Structural Engineers Association (NCSEA) to receive the prestigious 2019 Susan M. Frey Educator Award for his outstanding long-term service, contributions and commitment to the structural engineering profession. Dr. Ghosh received the special award at the Awards Celebration during the NCSEA Structural Engineering Summit on Nov. 14, 2019, in Anaheim, Calif.
The award — established to honor the memory of Sue Frey, one of NCSEA’s finest educators who passed away in May 2013 — is presented to an individual who has a genuine interest in, and extraordinary talent for, effective instruction for practicing structural engineers.
“I thought very highly of Susan Frey and was terribly saddened by her premature death,” said Dr. Ghosh upon learning that he was to be honored with the award. “It’s a privilege to have my name associated with hers.”
Dr. Ghosh is active on many national technical committees, is an honorary member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Structural Engineering Institute, and the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. He is a member of ACI Committee 318, Standard Building Code, and the ASCE 7 Standard Committee (Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures). He is a former member of the board of directors of ACI, the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, and the Building Seismic Safety Council. He is a member of the board of governors of ASCE’s Structural Engineering Institute.
Dr. Ghosh has influenced seismic design provisions in the United States for many years. In addition to authoring many publications in the area of structural design, Dr. Ghosh has investigated and reported on structural performance in most recent earthquakes.
“S.K. is really someone special. I have never seen someone so passionate about engineering and education. His long-term contributions and commitment to the structural engineering profession are greatly appreciated,” said International Code Council Executive Vice President Mark Johnson.
