SPECIAL ICC ALERTS | Help with Superstorm Sandy and Provide Feedback on improvements to the Code Development Process by Nov. 21
(The Code Council has pushed back the cdp ACCESS Steering Committee meeting and extended the suggestion submission deadline.)
Superstorm Sandy
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, ICC Members are faced with the daunting task of helping their communities and states recover. Residents along the U.S. East Coast were battered by the immense storm that made landfall Monday evening. IHS Global Insight estimates put the total loss to the U.S. economy between $30 and $50 billion. More than a million residents remain without power after Sandy claimed more than 110 lives in the United Sates.
It is only after immediate needs have been taken care of that the focus on recovery and rebuilding can really begin. The Code Council is providing building and fire safety professionals with an opportunity to volunteer to help with the recovery by assisting affected jurisdictions with building damage assessment, building inspections and other code-related functions. The Code Council will work with its Governmental Members to match them up with volunteers.
If you would like to volunteer to help in this time of need, please visit the ICC website at http://www.iccsafe.org/volunteer or call 888-ICC-SAFE (888-422-7233), ext. 5238.
Please note that volunteers do not represent ICC, and ICC does not represent any jurisdiction or entity that is requesting assistance. ICC does not investigate or assess the qualification, skills, capabilities or background of volunteers, and has no control over the volunteer’s information once it has been provided to state and local governments. In addition, all matters relating to a volunteer’s service – including the nature of the help needed, the time frame, expenses, housing, meals, insurance, salary reimbursement, and liability for injuries or damage to or by the volunteer – must be arranged between the volunteer and the jurisdiction requesting help.
Weigh in on the new effort to expand access to the Code Development Process
Have you provided your feedback on cdp ACCESS yet? Many of your fellow ICC colleagues have provided comments and suggestions over the past year to the cdp ACCESS Steering Committee of volunteers. If you missed our presentations to the Membership in Dallas and Portland, one of the four webinars we did during the summer, or one of the many other presentations committee members have done, you have one more chance to have your voice heard ahead of the ICC Board of Directors’ decision on next steps at their December meeting.
The Steering Committee plans to meet Nov. 30 to consider all of the specific feedback from Members on their initial proposal. This proposal includes much greater online access to the entire process for all Code Council Members and an online governmental consensus vote for Governmental Members at the end of the process. Learn more about cdp ACCESS and let us know what you think by emailing cdpACCESS@iccsafe.org by Nov. 21!
The International Code Council is a Member-focused association dedicated to helping the building safety community and construction industry provide safe and sustainable construction through the development of codes and standards used in the design, build and compliance process. Most U.S. communities and many global markets choose the International Codes.
