EBC BECWG Webinar: Building Energy Codes and Resilience – An international review

September 19, 2023 @ 6:00 pm

With the growth of extreme weather paired with long-duration power outages, regulators around the world are increasingly considering how building energy codes could support climate resilience. The BECWG initiated an international review of Resilience Issues in building energy codes, with a report commissioned by the Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water that will be launched during this webinar.

The international review examines how energy codes can improve survivability in extreme weather (hot or cold), including passive designs to cool buildings (and or reducing heating losses), and focuses on the application of building energy codes to improve the building stock’s ability to provide a level of thermal comfort and function during extreme events. The webinar will also highlight recent US Department of Energy research on how improving passive energy efficiency performance in buildings prevents deaths and keeps occupants safer during extreme weather events, and ongoing resilient code initiatives led by the International Code Council.

Speakers:

  • Adam Hinge, Sustainable Energy Partnerships: Resilience Issues in Building Energy Codes (forthcoming BECWG report)
  • Ellen Franconi, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory: Enhancing Resilience in Buildings Through Energy Efficiency
  • Neil Savery, International Code Council: Global Building Resilience Guidelines, and Energy Code as part of broader code solutions

Moderator: Dev Bhardwaj, Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water
