IS-SWDDV Standard Consensus Committee

ICC 815, Standard for Sizing Water Distribution, Sanitary Drainage and Vent Piping Systems
The Code Council has opened a new standards project to develop ICC 815, Standard for Sizing Water Distribution, Sanitary Drainage and Vent Piping Systems. This new international standard will establish minimum requirements for a comprehensive design methodology for sizing water distribution, sanitary drainage, and vent piping systems for residential, mixed-use, and institutional occupancies. The standard will consider the technical advances in estimating water usage patterns and post-COVID-19 societal changes.
Because current plumbing piping is sized based on plumbing fixtures from the 1940s, lower flow rates of modern plumbing fixtures and fittings result in wasted water and energy as well as the potential for the build-up of biofilm that can harbor opportunistic pathogens. ICC 815 will address these issues by focusing on proper velocity through water piping and proper disposal of waste in sanitary drainage systems with lower flow rates.
This committee will take a global approach to the develop minimum requirements and standards to safeguard the health, safety, and general welfare of the public and address societal and industry challenges through sizing water distribution, sanitary drainage, and vent piping systems for residential, mixed-use, and institutional occupancies.
The Sizing Water Distribution, Sanitary Drainage and Vent Piping Systems (IS-SWDDV) committee, including stakeholders from the international community, was appointed by the Code Council Board of Directors in December 2022.
ICC Standards are developed to address building industry challenges as they relate to compliance with the I-Codes. Participating in these committees will help to shape these standards to ensure safe, affordable and sustainable communities and buildings worldwide.
The Code Council adheres to openness and transparency in our standards development process. All ICC Standards committee meetings are open to the public. Any interested party can participate in committee meetings and can be considered by the committee for membership on any workgroup that the committee creates. Interested parties will be notified by email of standards activities related to Sizing Water Distribution, Sanitary Drainage and Vent Piping Systems, including committee meetings, sub-group meetings and the availability of standard development documentation. If you wish to be placed on the “interested parties” list for the development of this standard, contact IS-SWDDV Secretariat, Ramiro Mata rmata@iccsafe.org
The first public meeting of the committee was held on March 30, 2023. The final meeting for 2024 is scheduled on December 9th. Upcoming 2025 meetings are scheduled on the following dates: January 21, February 18, March 17, April 22, May 19, June 16, July 21, August 18, September 22, October 20, November 17, and December 15. All meetings will be 1pm - 3:30pm Central (2pm - 4:30pm Eastern) in virtual format using Microsoft Teams. Please contact the Secretariat, Ramiro Mata rmata@iccsafe.org, for details on how to attend.
